Blogs > If I Were An Angry State Worker ...

If I were an angry state worker, I'd be angry about a lot of things. Which is why I started this blog. I'm going to be venting like a broken air conditioning unit. And I invite you to do the same. Comment away, state workers. It's a tough world out there.

... I'd be angry about Edelstein

Move to North Dakota? Are you kidding me? This guy has got some stones. http://www.trentonian.com/articles/2009/07/29/opinion/doc4a6fd84cc0231180224183.txt

... I'd be angry at anyone who thinks Christie is a good idea

You hear this? He wants new state employees to pitch in on health insurance costs? Pay for our health insurance? Just a little bit? Like everyone else? I swear, this Christie guy is a real jerkface.

... I'd be angry about Christie's choice for lt. gov.

Just what we need... more law and order at the top of the ticket. Angry? I'm thrilled. Corzine will sweep these two out the door, keeping my job safe for another four years. Yee haw.

... I'd be angry about the pension fund

Why? Because it fell 19 PERCENT last year. Dig the digits: the whole account has a little over $60 billion in it. The account has to pay out $6 billion a year, and rising. And pension contributions are going down across the board. Two words: uh-oh.

... I'd be angry about this deal.

OK, let's break it down. Corzine says he won't lay any of us off, but we've got to take 10 furlough days. But, we'll get another week of paid leave down the line. And we get two raises next year. Sounds like we're getting royally screwed here!!! (Snicker-snicker. That Corzine just rolls over for anyone, I guess. Wonder where I'll take my vacations(s) next year...)

... I'd be angy about the private sector

Stop complaining, you private sector ninnies. So what if new jobs in government outpace new jobs in the private sector by 9-to-1 (at least by some estimates). Stop crying about it and do the smart thing -- join the government ranks! We're always hiring, more or less, and besides, I live by the old dictum: if you can't beat, join 'em and get great bennies.

... I'd be angry about this "right to work" law talk

Have you heard about this? The idea behind "right to work" laws -- which already exist in many western states -- would totally destroy our strangehold on the state government piggybank. Basically, forced union membership would end, and it would be up to us if we want to join. And for all you idiots who don't join, then the union dues go up for those who remain, and things will get ugly. Don't fall for it, state workers. Right to work laws would destroy us!

... I'd be angry at quantum physics

So Corzine says he'll be signing the budget next week. But I thought he was still negotiating with the unions over the contract restructuring? Aren't we supposed to, you know, vote or something? How can he sign the budget if the details of the new cotract aren't in place? This is some quantum physics governmental stuff, you ask me. Spooky action at a distance.

... I'd be angry (still) about Carla Katz

Can you imagine if all the details of Katz-Corzine relationship came out? I mean every detail. Like if one of them were taping all their conversations... would probably make for some interesting conversation, right?

... I'd be angry at hiring practices.

So what's the official number of "temporary" state workers, non-union folk? I hear it's north of 50,000. We need to get rid of these people before I hear another word -- ever -- about furloughs and layoffs. Besides, us state workers don't have enought to do. Get rid of the temps, and I can finally fill my day with honest-to-goodness work and I can stop surfing Facebook.

... I'd be angry about the AFL-CIO

"Governor Corzine has proved to be a strong ally of workers and their unions over the years," said New Jersey AFL-CIO president Charles Wowkanech. And that's why the union is standing behind Corzine for re-election. Now I'm not saying they should go and vote for Christie, but come on -- a "strong ally?" Really? Reeeeeaaaaallllly?

... I'd be angry about this $400 million

You hear about this? Tax amnesty program netted Corzine and Co. over $400 million. So much money they decided to postpone the budget vote. So much money that it would... probably cover the cost of furloughs. And then some.

... I wouldn't be angry at Corzine anymore.

Dig it! I can't wait until 2011 when I get not one, but two pay raises. Can't argue with that. Already booked a Jamaican holiday for me and the missus, using those seven personal days we're getting. Woo-freaking-hoo!

... I'd be wondering, out loud, about Chris Shelton

Is this guy looking out for us, or is he looking out for himself? I don't know about you, but I don't remember voting to not get my CONTRACTED 3.5 percent raise. You?

... I'd be angry about being hungry.

May the Heavens bless you, Rae Roeder! Out beloved head of 1033 knew what we needed, and she took care of it! Yes, Rae, yes! A food drive for us furloughed workers. That one day without pay some of us have been forced to take did put a massive dent in our cupboards. Nothing sadder than a furloughed state worker reduced to Ramen noodles for lunch. The horror, the horror.

... I'd want to punch Chris Christie in his nose.

Who does this guy think he's kidding? He's talking about canceling the union contract with the CWA if he gets elected? Thinks he can declare a "state financial emergency" to do so? Does he not know who he's dealing with? "This governor may be unwilling to say no to the state worker unions, but I'm going to be willing to say no to them," Christie told reporters. Go ahead, Chrissy. Try and say no to us. We'll destroy you. Bring it on, buddy. We'll run circles around you. Get it? Run circles? Because Chrissy is overweight? Get it????

Never thought I'd say this willingly, but CORZINE IN '09!

... I'd be angry about people who think I don't work hard

I mean for real. Like I do this for my health? You think I want to work in this stinkin' hovel all day long? Listen. I wake up, just like you non-state workers. I get in the shower, I throw a piece of toast in the toaster and end up burning it. I've got my kids running around, the dog needs a walk, and I've got to get the bills out in the mail. Then I go to work, driving there in my state-issued car, and work like a dog all day long. Of course, there's maybe 25 percent more people in my division than we need, so yeah, maybe I can slog off now and again. But not work hard? Every day? Please.
